SHAGMAG is a digital disruptor here to cultivate change and challenge the way people think. It’s also a place for women to come and own who they are and celebrate their bodies. It’s a brand that others have tried to shut down or unsuccessfully compete with. It’s a brand that questions societal norms and pushes boundaries. It's a brand that hasn’t always been accepted. SM. WHAT IS SHAGMAG, IN YOUR OWN WORDS? WHAT DOES IT STAND FOR? I did some research and it didn’t seem like anyone was trying to create the next Playboy, so I thought: who better to do it than me? I felt like the brand had lost it’s magic after Hugh’s death. I left feeling unimpressed by the opportunity, even though I had been a huge fan of Hugh Hefner growing up. I got a call from Playboy in early 2019 and met with them at their headquarters in Beverly Hills. SM. WHAT ORIGINALLY GAVE YOU THE IDEA TO CREATE SHAGMAG? It’s also the part of me that is really stubborn, like, “Oh, you don’t think I can do this …? Watch me.” Either way: everyone ends up talking about it. Climbing the HOLLYWOOD sign with helicopters surrounding me … it felt like I was in a real life video game! What is the point of living life if you aren’t willing to do something absolutely nuts every once in a while? Doing something big gets some people really pissed off – others will love it. It’s all about the adrenaline rush for me: I love doing things that seem crazy or impossible to break out of the mundanity of everyday life. OR, HAVE YOU COURTED SCANDAL? FLASHING THE SUPER BOWL AND GETTING A LIFETIME BAN FROM THE MLB … GETTING ARRESTED FOR CHANGING THE HOLLYWOOD SIGN TO READ HOLLYBOOB … WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO BREAK THE RULES SO PUBLICLY? SM. SCANDAL HAS COURTED YOU FOR A WHILE NOW. I wouldn’t say I was always a little trouble maker – but I was always a believer in doing whatever the fuck I wanted and questioning societial norms! Growing up in a small Texas town, I was surrounded by a very conservative way of thinking that’s not inherently a bad thing, but I just loved asking “why?” and challenging the way others thought about things. SM. SO, WERE YOU ALWAYS SUCH A LITTLE TROUBLE-MAKER? TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE ORIGINS OF JULIA ROSE … But she still can’t resist a chance to bare it all! In this interview, we probe our Editor-in-Chief’s mind about her rise to notoriety, the birth and growth of SHAGMAG, and what really gets her excited.
